Scary Fast: The Bad Boys Vettes C6R

Now that you know what’s happening in the motorsports world this weekend, we’d like to give you a bit of eye candy to hunt for during the race.

Bad Boy Vettes and their brace of newly liveried C6Rs are ready to take the track at Laguna Seca this weekend, and there’s a small chance that they might just scare away some of the weaker-willed competition.

The bad boys at BBV showed off their new war paint at a party on Wednesday night, complete with skulls, and blacked out wheels. The C6R, which has always been a rather fetching racer, is making us think that Halloween came a bit early this year.

Ferndale, MI renews discount parking for hybrids despite few takers

About a year ago, the city of Ferndale north of Detroit started a discount parking program for hybrid and high-mileage cars. Owners of hybrids and cars that get over 30 mpg can go to city hall to buy a special tag that allows them to park with feeding meters. City residents can get their tags for $8 while non-residents are charged $25. As the program reached the end of its first year, the city council reviewed it to determine whether to continue. In spite of only having twenty-one people actually register for one of the special tags, the council decided to renew the program. Given the low uptake on the program it probably makes sense to continue since it won't actually cost the city much revenue and it does provide yet another incentive to drive more efficient vehicles.

Entry-level, RWD vehicles coming from VW in 2010

More news on the microcar front comes in the form of "confidential planning documents" procured by Automobilwoche outlining Volkswagen's plan for its rear-wheel-drive compacts over the next nine years. VW considers the launch of its new "Small Family" lineup of RWD vehicles as the most important launch since the Beetle was fazed out in favor of the Golf in 1974.

Production of the new minicars will being in 2010, likely utilizing the Skoda plant in Vrchlabi, within the Czech Republic, with 100,000 vehicles destined for Europe sporting the Volkswagen badge, and another 100,000 wearing Skoda and Seat logos. Variants of the uber-compact three-door are expected to come in at about 3500mm long, sporting a price tag under €8,000, with a five-door version, stretched by 80mm and priced around €9,450.

The winner will be announced November 14 and the car will be delivered December 17, just before Christmas. Toyota Tuner - Toyota TRD Aurion Race Car Australia

Toyota is set to return to one of Australia's iconic motorsport events in 2008, tackling the legendary Targa Tasmania with a TRD Aurion. It will be the first time since 2003 that Toyota Australia has entered a car in the tarmac rally and will mark the first competitive outing for the TRD-designed-and-built 3.5-litre, supercharged V6 Aurion.

Toyota will enter a standard TRD Aurion prepared by the team at Neal Bates Motorsport - the same group behind Toyota's multiple-championship-winning TRD rally outfit. Former Targa winner Bates was an integral part of TRD Aurion's development and believes the car has the potential to knock off some of its race-bred competitors.

"We have only made minor modifications to the standard car, like fitting a roll cage, racing seats and safety equipment," said Neal Bates. "TRD Aurion was developed over roads like those found on Targa Tasmania so it will be great to see it being driven at its maximum." Although TRD Aurion will be competing against cars specifically designed for racing, Bates believes it can finish inside the top 15.

"Targa is an event I absolutely love and the team's ultimate aim is to finish inside the top 10 outright. It would be an amazing performance if we could achieve it," said Bates. "The entire team is very excited about returning to Targa as we haven't done a tarmac event in a while."

The car is set to run in the Modern category of Targa's 17th edition. Targa Tasmania will provide Toyota Australia with an idea of TRD Aurion's potential for future motorsport events.

Toyota's last entry in the iconic tarmac rally was in 2003 with a Camry Sportivo and involved two greats of world motorsport. The car was piloted by the legendary Colin Bond, with the former 'Voice of Formula One', commentator Murray Walker, acting as co-driver.
